The Music Staff and Grand Staff

A music staff is a set of five horizontal lines used to represent musical notation. Each line and space between the lines corresponds to a specific pitch. To accommodate a wider range of notes, two staves are often combined into a grand staff. The grand staff consists of two staves connected by a middle line:

The Treble Clef and Bass Clef

The treble clef and bass clef are symbols placed at the beginning of a staff to indicate the range of notes that will be written on that staff. Click to reveal more information below.

- - Also known as the G clef.
  - This clef is most commonly used for higher-pitched instruments and voices. It is identified by a stylized letter G that curls around the second line from the bottom.

- - Also known as the F clef.
  - This clef is primarily used for lower-pitched instruments and voices. It is identified by a stylized letter F with two dots around the second line from the top.

1. 1. Find the "E" line: The bottom line on the treble clef is always the "E" line.
  2. Count upwards: Starting from the "E" line, count the lines and spaces as follows: E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, and F.

- 1. Find the "G" line: The bottom line on the bass clef is always the "G" line.
  2. Count upwards: Starting from the "G" line, count the spaces and lines as follows: G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and A.

Remember: The pattern of letters repeats in each octave. So, if you know the name of a note in one octave, you can determine the names of the notes in other octaves by continuing the pattern.

Music students often use mnemonic devices or sayings to memorize the names of the notes on the lines and spaces.

Notes on the Piano Keyboard

For the purposes of music theory, it is important to have a general understanding of where the keys on a piano keyboard are and how they relate to the notes you just learned. The white keys on the piano are the “natural” notes: A,B,C,D,E,F,G, and back to A. This pattern makes up one octave (an 8-note group). Then the pattern repeats itself in different octaves. You will notice the black keys on the piano keyboard are alternating sets of two black keys and three black keys together. The note “C” is just to the left of any of the sets of two black keys. Each octave is numbered, with a total of 8 different octaves.
