Reading and Writing

The Reading and Writing section of the SAT focuses on questions that apply to real-world scenarios. Students have 64 minutes, or 32 minutes per module, to take this section of the exam. This section contains short reading passages or passage pairs drawn from literature, history and social studies, science, and the humanities.

There are a total of 54 questions on this section of the SAT. Questions are multiple-choice and come from four domains. Learn more about these domains and the skills they cover below.

Math

The Math section of the SAT focuses on problem-solving and data analysis. Students will have 70 minutes, or 35 minutes per module, to take this section of the exam. Many questions in this section will include scenarios related to science, social studies, and the real world.

There are a total of 44 questions in the Math section. Questions will be both multiple-choice and student-produced response questions. You may use your calculator at any time on the SAT. However, there are some sections where calculator use might be less efficient. Students will be allowed to choose whether they should use a calculator or independent reasoning throughout this section.

How is the SAT Scored?

Your SAT scores will be a combination of the scores you earn on the two sections of the test. The SAT total score can range from 400 – 1600. You will receive a score of 200-800 for the Reading and Writing section and a score of 200 – 800 for the Math section. The total score will be the sum of the scores for both sections combined. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers, so it is a best practice to make an educated guess if you don’t know an answer. It won’t hurt your score!

Your scores will come from several areas, like the difficulty level of questions, whether your questions were right, and if you were likely guessing. So, two students might answer the same number of questions right but earn different scores based on these factors.
