In the last lesson, you explored how epidemiologists track diseases and use data to guide decisions and protect communities. Public health isn’t just about reacting to disease—it’s about staying ahead.

Screening and prevention are effective ways to halt diseases before they spread, helping individuals and communities stay healthier.

You’ve seen this in Jordan’s story. Jordan, a college student with type 2 diabetes, initially had no obvious symptoms. High blood sugar levels were detected during a routine screening at her campus clinic. That early screening allowed Jordan to start treatment and make lifestyle changes before serious complications developed. Without it, her diabetes might have gone unnoticed until it became harder to manage.

In this lesson, you’ll see how screening identifies diseases early, how prevention works at different illness stages, and why selecting the right screening tests—considering sensitivity and specificity—is crucial. You’ll also learn why not everyone has equal access to screening and how public health works to reduce these gaps and health disparities.

Building On What You Already Know

You’ve already seen how important prevention is in public health. Earlier in this course, we briefly covered screening and prevention while learning about epidemiology’s role in tracking diseases, responding to outbreaks, and making health decisions. Now, we’re going deeper into how these strategies work to protect individuals and entire communities.

Prevention refers to efforts to reduce the risk or likelihood of developing a disease before it occurs

Screening means testing people who don’t yet have symptoms to find diseases early when they’re easier to treat or manage. We briefly mentioned how screening is used in public health early in the course, but let’s refresh our memories and look a little closer. An example of screening is screening for high blood pressure. This screening can help prevent heart disease or stroke. Screening for high blood sugar can catch diabetes before it leads to more serious problems. But not every screening test is perfect. To decide which screening tests to use, public health professionals must understand two important qualities: sensitivity and specificity.

Sensitivity vs Specificity

A high-sensitivity test is good at finding most cases, but it might also create false alarms by saying someone has the disease when they don’t (false positives). A test with high specificity avoids false alarms but might miss people who really have the disease (false negatives). Epidemiologists have to weigh these tradeoffs when choosing screening methods for different populations.

Jordan’s story is a great example. Earlier in the course, you learned how Jordan, a college student, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after a routine screening at her campus clinic. The Levels of Prevention

Screening is just one part of prevention, including strategies to stop or slow the disease. Although we previously covered the levels of prevention when we first went deeper with learning non-communicable diseases, let’s review those. Public health uses three levels of prevention, each with a different goal:

For someone like Jordan, primary prevention might have included healthy eating campaigns in her school or community to lower the risk of diabetes. Her secondary prevention was the screening test that caught her diabetes early. Now, she’s taking part in tertiary prevention through diabetes education and treatment to help manage her condition and avoid serious complications.

Each level of prevention works together to reduce the burden of disease on individuals, families, and society.

Access, Equity, and the Role of Public Health

Screening and prevention programs can save lives but aren’t equally available, creating health disparities. These disparities arise from unfair social, economic, or environmental factors, like the lack of clinics or healthy food in certain neighborhoods. image of wealthy couple next to a poor couple Public health professionals aim to close these gaps by improving access and designing targeted interventions.

Decisions about screening frequency and available programs rely on evidence-based policy, using research and data to determine effective actions. Solid evidence ensures screening programs are effective, fair, and beneficial to the populations served.

Screening and prevention are strategies reflecting public health’s goal of maintaining community health, reducing costs, and protecting vulnerable groups. Early disease detection leads to fewer costly treatments later, improving community health overall.

Understanding how screening and prevention work together shows that epidemiology not only reacts to disease but also prevents its growth. Jordan’s story illustrates how screening changed her health journey by catching her diabetes early, giving her a chance to manage it before serious problems developed.

Like Jordan, entire communities benefited when prevention and screening programs were accessible and practical.
