Day 19-20: Earth Day Project

Introduction

In this lesson, you will continue to learn how coordinate planes help to organize information. Additionally, you will learn how to represent numerical patterns on a coordinate plane and identify relationships between two sets of given rules. 

Yesterday, we learned how to represent a real world mathematical problem by graphing points in the first quadrant, interpreting the values and creating a graph based on the information provided.  Today, we will continue to practice this concept as well as learn how to represent numerical patterns on a coordinate plane and identify relationships between two sets of given rules with a fun project.

Warm Up

But first, let’s wake our brains up! Complete the following warm up activity in your math journal:

Mini Lesson

Before beginning this activity, please complete the following: Print the “Earth Day Project” information and glue it in your math journal.

Take a second to look at days 1 through 3. What do you think  is happening each day? Is there something consistent happening with the cans each day? Jot down your ideas and identify what you think the pattern is. When you are done, if the pattern continues, sketch the number of cans collected on days 4 through 6 in the boxes.

Assignment

We are going to continue the pattern of identifying how many cans are collected each day. With this information, we are going to create a line graph to represent our findings. Reflect back to the activity we completed yesterday on how we organized information from a situation and appropriately graph it. I want you to continue working, document your findings  and see how many days it will take to collect approximately 100 cans. Additionally, answer the questions provided on your project information sheet.
