Introduction

In this unit, you will learn how to multiply and divide fractions greater than and less than one whole using models and multiple strategies. In addition, you will learn that when multiplying a fraction greater than one by a number results in a product greater than one and when multiplying a fraction less than one by a number results in a product less than one. 

Today, you will learn how to find fractional parts of other numbers using models.

Before we begin, let’s get warmed up! See how many fractions you can identify as greater than or less than one whole.

How do we find fractional parts of other numbers? 

Read the scenario below. Once you have read it, see if you can answer the questions provided on the next page in your journal. AFTER you have tried your best to answer each question, check and see if you are correct by clicking on the presentation. 

We have 12 jelly beans. We want to find ¼ of the jelly beans. Think-Pair-Share your strategies on how they can find ¼ of the jelly beans. 

    1. Are there some strategies we can use to find 1/4 of the total jelly beans?  Draw a model of a strategy that you could use to show 1/4 of 12:
    2. How much is 1/4 of 12? 
    3. If you were given this problem but there were jelly beans or pictures, what operation do you think we need to do to solve this problem mathematically? What is the number sentence for this problem?
    4. Reflection: Is the product bigger or smaller than what you started with? 
    5. Is it reasonable for the product to be smaller than what you started with? Why or what not?
