Lesson 13: How Do We Solve Real World Problems?

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn how to solve real world problems with decimals.

Yesterday, we learned how to use several strategies to help us divide decimals. Today, we will learn how to solve real world problems that involve division of decimals.

Real World Problems with Decimals

Think back to when we practiced how to read and solve real world problems with the use of the 4-Square strategy when multiplying decimals. Today, we will continue to use this strategy when learning how to read and solve real world problems when dividing decimals.

Read the problem below:

Kelli worked for 4.5 hours.  If she got paid a total of $67.50, how much money per hour did Kelli earn?

In Your Journal: Create a 4-Square, like the one in the presentation below, in your math journal and break down the information in the problem with the help of each question in the strategy. Use the information in the presentation to help you understand and evaluate the real world problem above.

Now it’s your turn!

  1. Choose one real world problem from the list below.
  2. Create a poster on a piece of white paper using the 4 Square strategy.
  3. You may design your poster however you would like, but the following needs to be included:
    1. the real world problem
    2. the 4 Square strategy
