Lesson 4: How Do We Solve Real World Decimal Problems?

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn how to solve real world problems with decimals.

Yesterday, you learned different multiplication strategies to multiply decimals greater than one whole. Today, you will learn how to solve real world problems with decimals.

Real World Problems with Decimals

Think back to our multiplication and division unit when we began learning how to read and solve real world problems with the use of the 4-Square strategy. We will continue to use this strategy when learning how to read and solve real world problems with decimals.

Read the problem below:

Henrietta bought 23.6 pounds of apples from the apple festival.  Each pound cost $1.45. How much did Henrietta spend in total on the apples?

In Your Journal: Create a 4-Square, like the one in the presentation below, in your math journal and break down the information in the problem with the help of each question in the strategy. Use the information in the presentation to help you understand and evaluate the real world problem above.
