FRQ 4: Argument Essay
Free-response question 4: Argument Essay assesses students’ ability to do the following:
- Articulate a defensible claim or thesis that responds to the question and establishes a line of reasoning.
- Provide evidence from one of the foundational documents listed in the question to support the claim.
- Provide evidence from a second foundational document or from knowledge of course concepts to support the claim.
- Use reasoning to explain why the evidence supports the claim.
- Respond to an opposing or alternate perspective using rebuttal or refutation.
Scoring Points
Scoring Guideline for Question 4: Argument Essay 6 points | ||
Claim/Thesis (0-1 points) | A | Responds to the prompt with a defensible claim or thesis that establishes a line of reasoning. |
Evidence (0-3 points) | B1 |
Provides one piece of evidence that is relevant to the topic of the prompt. |
B2 |
Uses one piece of specific and relevant evidence to support the claim or thesis. OR Provides two pieces of evidence that are relevant to the topic of the prompt. |

Reasoning (0-1 points) | C | Uses reasoning (classification, process, causation or comparison) to explain how or why the evidence supports an argument relevant to the prompt. |
