The Bill of Rights
The Anti-Federalists’ main argument against the Constitution was the lack of protection on individual and states’ rights. Their argument stemmed from the history with Great Britain’s monarchical and often authoritarian rule. The Anti-Federalists’ aim was to protect the individual’s rights and not the power of a strong central government.
The Federalists supported the Anti-Federalists’ wishes for a Bill of Rights to be added to the Constitution in return for their agreement to ratify the Constitution. With nine states ratifying the Constitution, James Madison, a prominent Federalist, drafted the first ten amendments to the Constitution. These ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.
