Taxation in the Colonies

Following the period of known as Salutary Neglect in the American Colonies, the British government looked to regain control. Salutary Neglect allowed the American Colonies to avoid taxes, punishments for smugglers, and grow their established systems of self-rule. With the British need to pay for years of war, including the French and Indian War, they now turned to regulating strict control over the American Colonies to help pay their debts.
