CE - Colonial Era Module Overview
The Colonial Era
Introduction
The Colonial Period is the foundational era of American History as we know it today. Europeans from a variety of nations set out across the Atlantic in search of riches, expanded economic markets, a new start on life, and religious freedom. The thirteen English Colonies that developed would eventually become the original thirteen states of our republic. The thirteen colonies were divided into three geographic groupings: New England, Middle, and the Southern colonies. Each one of these regions had some common characteristics, but also some key differences both socially and economically. While primarily English, there were other groups that settled here as well. During this time period the concept of mercantilism was predominant and resulted in a competitive trans-Atlantic trade. Soon, the colonies became a part of the trade route. Unfortunately, this resulted in an increase in African slave trade as well, which included the horrible Middle Passage. However, the African experience in the Americas would bring new cultural traditions and provide contributions that impact our society today. Colonists were focused on social mobility and key figures such as Benjamin Franklin promoted the idea of Individualism. Another major movement which is associated with Colonial America is the Great Awakening, which resulted in a massive religious revival. All of these are examples of factors that helped shaped the Colonial Period.
