CT - The Five Themes of Geography [LESSON]

The Five Themes of Geography

Just like we can study geography through different perspectives like physical, cultural, political, population, environmental, and economic, we can also study geography through the Five Themes of Geography. The Five Themes of Geography are: Location, Place, Region, Movement/Migration, & Human-Environment Interaction (HEI). These five themes are interwoven throughout the course, so it is important for us to understand what they are and what they mean. More importantly, the Five Themes of Geography affect YOU. Let’s learn how!

Guide Point 🧭

The Five Themes of Geography

Theme 1: Location – Your location matters! Where a person lives affects how that person lives. In geography, there are two types of location – absolute & relative location. Your absolute location is precisely where you are based on a grid system of latitude and longitude lines. Your relative location is where you are in relation to other places. We will learn more about this in the next Map & Globe Skills module.

think icon Have you considered how your life is affected by where you live? How does your location affect your daily routines, access to resources, and social interactions?

A city square with buildings, automobiles, and vegetation.

Theme 2: Place – Your place matters, too! Place is different than location. You could say you live in Atlanta or Savannah, and that would describe your location, but does it really describe the place? Not really. Place is at the heart of geography, where the physical and human characteristics of locations come alive. It's about the stories behind the landscapes, whether it's the awe-inspiring beauty of natural wonders or the rich fabric of cultures found in cities and communities. Place shapes our identity and sense of belonging, reminding us that each corner of the world has its own unique tale to tell.

think iconHave you explored your place lately? What makes it unique? At first glance you may think the answer to that question is “nothing,” but rest assured that there are elements that make your place special. How do the physical and cultural characteristics of your place impact your sense of belonging and identity?

A suggested map of the state of Oregon with various named regions.

Theme 3: Region – Places go together! Region is about grouping places with common traits, whether it's shared language, culture, or environmental characteristics. Regions help us understand the diversity of our world and how different areas influence our lives in unique ways. The regions of places are subjective, meaning different people may have different ideas about what makes a region within certain places. For example, another person may have a different idea about the various regions of the state of Oregon.

think icon Which cultural region(s) do you belong to? Consider factors like language, traditions, and values.

How do these aspects influence your identity and interactions with others?

Theme 4: Movement/Migration – People move! Movement reveals the world's connections and the ways people, ideas, and goods travel across the globe. It's about the bridges we build through technology, transportation, and cultural exchange. Whether it's a chat with a friend on the other side of the world or the delivery of products from distant places, movement showcases the interwoven nature of our world.

think iconHow have technology and communication tools made the world “smaller”? How have social media, online learning, and globalization changed the way you connect with people and cultures worldwide?

Theme 5: Human-Environment Interaction (HEI) - Human & Physical Geography Interact! Human-Environment Interaction explores how people and nature coexist. Our physical geography affects our culture and vice versa, our culture affects our physical geography. For example, it's about the choices we make every day, from recycling to conservation efforts, and how these actions impact our surroundings. This theme reminds us that our relationship with the environment is a dynamic one, where our decisions shape not only our current world but also the future of the planet.

think iconWhat environmental choices, such as recycling, energy consumption or sustainable practices do you make? Do you consciously think about these choices? Every time you use your smartphone, videogame console or hair straightener do you think about how that choice interacts with your surrounding environment? Why or why not? How do individual and collective actions affect your local environment and ecosystems?

Can you determine which geography theme is being used in the Geography Themes Activity below? Read each definition and determine the geography theme being described.

Reflection

In addition to the six perspectives of geography: physical, cultural, political, population, environmental, and economic, we also have the Five Themes of Geography, that challenge us as geographers to consider the implications of location, place, regionality, movement/migration, and human-environment interaction. Together, these perspectives and themes will provide us with a thorough understanding of geographic issues throughout this course! More than that though, these themes also impact you daily, usually without you ever thinking about it... until now.
