CTSO 3 - Service Opportunities Lesson

Service Opportunities

Introduction

Great leaders have a desire to impact their community. You may not have $1000 to contribute to a local cause, but there are practical things you can do to make lasting impressions. Taking advantage of service opportunities that cross your path daily is a start.

Leading by Example

Effective leaders model their leadership by investing in relationships, motivating others, and networking with other leaders.

Investing in Relationships

Icon of person leading another up a mountain Because it has been determined that you are a leader, you should get to know the individuals in your community by volunteering. Volunteering assists in establishing unity and teamwork. You are also able to increase your understanding of community needs as well as give back to the community that was instrumental in your leadership development.

Motivating Others

While investing in relationships with individuals in the community, you will determine what motivates them to work harder and have a desire to improve the conditions in their community. The motivation can be extrinsic such as an opportunity to receive a gift for services performed or it can be intrinsic which would result in recognizing an individual for services performed.

Networking

Networking is the process of interacting with people to exchange information and develop contacts for possible career opportunities. While networking, share information about your skills and goals for making a positive difference in your community. The individuals you communicate these details with may have connections with other leaders who can assist you in obtaining a job or aid in other areas of leadership development. Creating networking cards to share details about your qualifications and skills would be a great resource to share as you communicate with leaders and individuals in your community.

Service Agencies

Service agencies were established to assist communities in times of need, promote awareness, and offer training. As a rising leader, it would benefit you to be knowledgeable of the mission and purpose of agencies in your community. Takeaway

You are a leader whether you believe it or not. There is someone in your circle of influence watching how you approach situations. Some leaders react and give no thought to the outcome. Other leaders respond by thinking through the situation, and considering how their decision will affect others and themselves. Great leaders impact their communities by volunteering for various events and joining organizations that assist in developing interpersonal and leadership skills. They also motivate and encourage others to be the best they can be. Decide today to be a leader that will make a positive difference in your community.
