Introduction to Game Design Document

Introduction

Have you ever dreamed of creating your own video game?

Embarking on the journey of creating a video game is an exciting and complex task that requires careful planning. One essential step in this process is the creation of a game design document which you will learn about in this lesson.

Knowledge Point

Before we jump into the discussion about game design documents, let’s zoom in on some of the core principles of game design.

As you know the ultimate goal of all game types is to create an engaging and enjoyable experience for gamers. In reaching that goal, keep in mind the core principles of game design:

  • Goal- Objective of the game.
  • Mechanics- The actions players can take in a game.
  • Space- Where the game takes place.
  • Components- All of the pieces necessary to play the game (i.e. characters).
  • Rules- Instructions all players will follow when playing.

Take a moment to visualize those principles of game design by viewing the video below.

The Game Design Document

As we keep the principles of game design in mind, as mentioned it is important to create a game design document. This document serves as a roadmap for game developers, outlining the game's concept, mechanics, story, characters, levels, and more. By detailing all aspects of the game in one place, a game design document ensures that everyone involved in the game's creation is on the same page and working towards a shared vision.

Take a look at what we can include in the game design document below. What you may notice is the game design document (GDD) includes ALL of the principles of game design.

Reflection

Game design principles focus on creating an engaging experience for players through goals, mechanics, space, components, and rules. A Game Design Document (GDD) acts as a blueprint for game developers, outlining concepts, mechanics, story, characters, levels, and more. It ensures everyone involved is aligned towards a shared vision. By following these design principles and documenting them in a GDD, game developers can effectively create immersive and coherent gaming experiences.
