CCU: Lesson - The Importance of Data
The Importance of Data
Think About It...
As we begin our next lesson, ask yourself a question:
- What do you think of when you hear the word data?
- What experience(s) do you have with data in your daily life, if any?
Data, Data, Data!
Continuing to think about daily encounters, have you ever thought of the following questions:
- Have you noticed the constant requests to “know your location” when you access apps?
- Have you stopped to question why an app would need to know your location when you are not requesting directions to a location?
- What about “permissions” to access information stored on your phone or personal device, such as your contacts?
- Why would an app need access to all of your contacts?
- How does your device knows when to show you a discount to a restaurant or store that you just happen to be near?
All of this information that apps are requesting and that you are being asked to share is...you guessed it: data!
What is Data?
As consumers and creators, we should have a thorough understanding of how data is defined and why it is important. According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition, data is defined as facts that can be analyzed or used in an
effort to gain knowledge or make decisions; information. A quick side note: the word data is generally considered to be a plural noun (data are... = correct). The singular form is datum. Even so, people often use data as a singular, so this is more just an interesting fact to keep in mind: if you want to be perfectly accurate, use data as a plural.
As stated above, there are instances in which data collection may seem passive and insignificant and the purpose may seem vague at best. However, there are countless examples in which intentional data collection and analysis can save lives, improve the quality of life, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of daily living. For example, data collection and analysis in medicine, agriculture, and educational practices, continues to have a direct impact in the life of every student in the U.S.
