Problem-Solving

Introduction

Problem-Solving is an important skill in the workplace. We will dig deeper into this concept in our microlesson.

Problem-Solving Skills

EinsteinQuote.png One of the top employability skills employers look for in prospective employees is critical thinking skills. Employers look for candidates who exhibit critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze and apply information in various business situations. There are many approaches to problem-solving, depending on the nature of the problem and the people involved in the problem. Having the necessary skills to identify solutions to problems is one of the skills that employers look for in employees. In this lesson we will look at processes that you can use to work through problems and develop your critical thinking skills.

Got Problems? Need Help?

We face a wide range of problems every day. A problem is difficulty or uncertainty – a difference between the way something should be and the way it is. An individual’s problem may be how to improve grades in a particular class or how to stick to a budget. A business’s problem may be determining how to cut costs, how to increase employee satisfaction, or possibly determining ways to keep up with the competition.

Everyone experiences problems from time to time. Some of our problems are big and complicated, while others may be more easily solved. There is no shortage of challenges and issues that can arise on the job. Whether in an office or on a construction site, experiencing difficulties with the tasks at hand or with co-workers, the workplace presents ongoing challenges on a daily basis. Whether these problems are large or small, they need to be dealt with constructively and fairly.

Review the presentation below for one perspective of a problem-solving process.

Another process for problem-solving has been developed by motivational speaker, Tom McNeil. His avenue for problem-solving or overcoming obstacles is referred to as APEF.

This is a more simple approach to problem-solving. Exceptional employees can:

  • think critically and creatively
  • share thoughts and opinions
  • use good judgment
  • and make decisions

It is not always the approach taken to solve a problem; employers are usually appreciative when new employees are able to offer insight and fresh perspective into better and more efficient ways of doing things, regardless of the problem-solving process you use.

Takeaway

Throughout your life – in school, in college, and in your career – there will be times you will be faced with problems.takeawayicon.png  The ability to be able to problem-solve will be critical. It is a very valuable skill to be able to recognize and identify a problem, determine solutions, and take corrective actions in order to address the issue at hand. Problem solving and critical thinking refers to the ability to use knowledge, facts, and data to effectively solve problems. This doesn’t mean you need to have an immediate answer, it means you have to be able to think on your feet, assess problems and find solutions. The ability to develop a well thought out solution within a reasonable time frame, however, is a skill that employers value greatly.
