FAM: Lesson - Conjugating ER and IR Verbs
Conjugating ER and IR Verbs
Before we begin this lesson, please make sure to have your Verb Conjugation Practice Handout Links to an external site. nearby. You should have a version that already has some verbs conjugated, so please continue to use that version. If you can't find it, be sure to download it again!
Does this look familiar?
AR Verbs | ER Verbs | IR Verbs | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
o | amos | o | emos | o | imos |
as | áis | es | éis | es | ís |
a | an | e | en | e | en |
It should! It's the same set of endings that appear in your Verb Conjugation handout!
Conjugation Review
Review your notes: you should have information about conjugating AR verbs from module 3. We will be building on the skills you learned when working with AR verbs, but apply them to the other two verb groups (conjugations - remember, groups of verbs are called conjugations): ER verbs and IR verbs.
To conjugate a verb in Spanish in the present tense, you have to do the following:
- Start with the infinitive form:
- comer
- Remove the -ar, -er, or -ir:
- comer - er = com-
- Add the endings for that particular conjugation
- comer = ER verb, so we will add: o, es, e, emos, éis, en:
- como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen
- comer = ER verb, so we will add: o, es, e, emos, éis, en:
In a table, it would look like this:
Person | Singular | Plural |
---|---|---|
1st Person | como | comemos |
2nd Person | comes | coméis |
3rd Person / 2nd Person Formal | come | comen |
Video Lesson
Grab your apuntes, un lápiz and un cuaderno and watch this video lesson to refresh verb conjugation.
It is critical for you to update your notes with the new information for ER and IR verbs! While the process is the same for each conjugation, it is important to make notes about the different endings for each.

Conjugation Practice
The first thing you should do is open your Verb Conjugation Handout and practice conjugating the following verbs, using the format provided in the handout.
Be sure to practice on at least 2-3 verbs of each type (ER and IR) and go back and pick some AR verbs from earlier to reinforce your previous learning. It's also good practice to write the English meaning for each of your conjugated forms so that you consistently connect the endings to their pronouns/meanings.
- Abrir - To open
- Aprender - To learn
- Beber - To drink
- Comer - To eat
- Compartir - To share
- Comprender - To understand
- Correr - To run
- Escribir - To write
- Leer - To read
- Vivir - To live
Practice Activity
Use the following activity to continue skill-building with ER and IR verbs.
NOTE: You are required to use information from this course to complete all practice activities. Additionally, fill-in-the-blank activities can be very particular: if an item is marked incorrect, double check that it wasn't something as minor as an extra space or a capital letter in the wrong place!
