You use transition words regularly in your everyday speech and writing, whether you recognize it or not! 

In every language, transition words are helpful tools that connect our ideas and give a natural flow to the rhythm of our speech. They’re vital to learn to improve your Spanish fluency. 

What are Transition Words?

Transition words are all those words and phrases that you use to connect ideas between sentences. These words allow you to “transition” from one sentence or clause to another in a smooth way.

There are many transition words, but we will begin by learning a few basic Spanish transition words. As you learn these words, pay attention to how you can place them in the context of a sentence. We will provide a few examples for each word.

  • Antes de - Before
  • Después de - After, afterward(s)
  • Finalmente - Finally
  • Luego - Later
  • También - Also
  • Y - And

Below is a set of common phrases using transition words.

Transition Word Example Sentences
Antes (de) - before
  • Yo necesito leer el primer capítulo del libro antes de la clase de historia.
  • Necesitamos escuchar antes de hablar.

Después (de) - after
  • Los lunes, primero tenemos clase de música y después tenemos clase de español.
  • Me gusta pintar después de estudiar.

Finalmente - finally
  • Los alumnos estudian y finalmente toman el examen de matemáticas.
  • Primero aprendemos, luego estudiamos, finalmente tomamos el examen.
    • Note how finalmente works with other transition words in this example to provide the sequence of events.

Luego - later
  • La profesora habla con los alumnos y luego, prepara el proyecto.
  • Yo estudio y luego juego con mis amigos.

También - also
  • Para sacar buenas notas tengo que estudiar y también tengo que prestar atención en la clase.
  • Los martes tenemos clase de inglés y también tenemos clase de español.

Y - and
  • Para la clase de historia necesito un libro y un cuaderno
  • La clase de música empieza a las diez menos cuarto de la mañana y termina a las once menos diez de la mañana.
