AOT - Application of Thermodynamics Module Overview

Application of Thermodynamics Module Overview

Introduction

In the previous module, the concept of enthalpy was introduced and explained in the context of chemical processes that either absorb or release heat energy. The release of heat energy to the surroundings was explained to be a favorable process. However, as will be shown in this module, enthalpy is not the only deciding factor when determining if a chemical or physical process will occur without the assistance of an outside source of energy. There is another factor that has to do with either the increase or decrease of order within a system. Ultimately, these two parameters will be combined into a third which actually does have the ability to give a definite answer as to whether a process will proceed or not.

In addition, this module also investigates reactions involving the transfer of electrons more closely. While these reactions have been investigated in an earlier unit, the more practical applications of these reactions will be explored. Furthermore, ties to equilibrium will also be revealed.
