Elements of Art and Principles of Design

The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are the building blocks of any composition within art. They can be seen in pieces between cultures, time periods, genres, and artists, though they are used uniquely in any case. Artists achieve design principles by building upon the basics of the elements, the foundations of art. Depending on how the Elements and Principles are used, artists can achieve different effects. Thus, the differing use of Elements and Principles determines the genre of artwork. Most compositions in almost everything are based upon the structural aspects of the design principles and elements.

They work together to form a unified composition, and when utilized successfully, create a strong, dynamic visual layout. The artist uses them as tools that control how a message is delivered to an audience.
