DL - Development and Learning Module Overview

Module Overview

Introduction

Welcome to the Development Module! Developmental Psychology explores the fascinating journey of growth and change that individuals undergo. From impacting child-rearing practices to career satisfaction, developmental psychology is crucial in our lives. In this module, we will explore how biological, cognitive, and environmental factors intersect to shape our growth across the lifespan. While the most significant developmental phase typically occurs from birth to around 18 years old, it's important to note that growth is a lifelong process. While some traits remain stable, others, like memory or sensory abilities, can evolve with age.

As we progress in this module, you will be able to comprehend formal and informal learning experiences that individuals encounter throughout their lives. Concepts like classical and operant conditioning, which have been extensively researched for over a century, will be explored. The evolution of learning theories, especially with the advent of computers and artificial intelligence, continues to revolutionize our understanding of how individuals learn and develop.

Learning Targets:

  • Describe the key stages of human development, including prenatal, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging.
  • Identify the major physical, cognitive, and socioemotional changes at each stage.
  • Compare and contrast major learning theories, including classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning theory.
  • Evaluate how these theories have been applied to educational practices and personal development.
