COG - Cognition Module Overview

Module Overview

Introduction

Cognition, the mental process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, plays a crucial role in psychology. As you explore cognition in AP Psychology, you will investigate the reliability of our senses in perceiving the world accurately. You will uncover why individuals sometimes make poor decisions, as well as techniques to enhance memory retention of important information. Furthermore, you will learn how our brain's recording of memories can differ from our actual experiences, shedding light on the complexities of human cognition.

Building upon the foundational knowledge acquired in Module 1, this new module aims to provide insight into memory processes, thought patterns, judgment, problem-solving skills, and memory enhancement strategies. By delving into the measurement of intelligence and achievement, you will understand the implications of these assessments in various aspects of life, from educational opportunities to career advancement. Additionally, the focus on perception intertwined with sensation will bridge the gap between biological behavior and cognitive psychology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of sensory input and cognitive processes. Throughout this unit, you will be encouraged to think more critically about your cognitive processes, make informed decisions, and appreciate the marvels of the human mind.

Learning Targets:

  • Describe the four primary touch sensations and how our bodies perceive touch.
  • Analyze the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence our perception of pain, and discuss how placebos and distraction techniques can mitigate pain.
  • Describe the processes involved in our senses of taste and smell.
  • Explain the mechanisms by which we detect our body's position and movement.
  • Discuss how sensory interaction shapes our perceptions and define the concept of embodied cognition.
