Introduction

In psychology, we study the relationship between our biological systems and mental processes. Studying biology within psychology provides insight into how our physical and psychological well-being are interrelated. As we learn how biological systems affect our actions and responses, we gain a deeper understanding of psychology and the underlying mechanisms of human behavior. Taking a closer look at neurons, the functioning of the brain, and the impact of sleep and sensation on behavior can provide insight into the complexities of our brains.

A study of the biological foundations of psychology is also essential because everything psychological is also biological. As our identity is shaped by the contents of our brains, we can see how biological processes and our sense of self are intricately linked. Understanding how our brains influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we begin to understand the profound connection between biology and psychology. In this module, we'll explore the biology of the mind and how it impacts behavior, perceptions, and consciousness. We'll learn how the psyche contributes to our overall health.

Learning Targets:

  • Explain the structure and function of neurons, including how they communicate within the nervous system.
  • Compare and contrast different types of neurons and how they contribute to our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
  • Identify and describe the major structures of the brain and their functions.
  • Assess how sleep and sensory experiences influence behavior and mental processes.
