Hello again!
This speech, by President Ronald Reagan, was directed to the people of West Berlin. It contains one of the most memorable lines spoken during his presidency, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
The Berlin Wall, referred to by the President, was built by Communists to keep the people of East Berlin in Eastern Berlin. The wall stood as a stark symbol of the decades-old Cold War between the United States.

In the end, Gorbachev’s actions put pressure on the East German government to open barriers to the West. Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his work in ending the Cold War, including the fall of the Berlin Wall.
