Lesson 1: Who's & What's the Civil Rights
Introduction
In this unit, we will learn how the Civil Rights Movement was used to address the civil wrongs of many Americans and the impact the Civil Rights Movement had on today's society.
By using the connecting theme of beliefs and ideals, you will learn the reasons why the rights of a group of people should be protected and upheld. You will use the theme of individuals, groups, and institutions to learn about the important people who fought for the rights of others. Using the theme of technological innovations will help you learn how technology can have both positive and negative impacts on those around you.
For this unit, you will focus on the following questions:
How did the Civil Rights movement change America?
What events made up the Civil Rights movement?
Why did important Civil Rights figures think a change needed to be made?
Why is it important to treat people equally?
How were other people treated unfairly?
What did people and the government do to help create equality?
The Who's & What's of the Civil Rights
Welcome Back, Students!
Today we will begin learning about the Civil Rights Movement. This was a time of unrest for many African Americans in the United States due to the Jim Crow Laws.
In your journal: To begin, please draw the following table in your social studies journal. Then, I want you to consider each person or event and record what you know, have heard, or predict about each one. As you learn about the terms, you will come back to this chart and complete the bottom portion.
Don’t forget to come back to this chart throughout the unit to add information to the “What is it?” section of each person, event, or term.
