The Beginning of the Cold War Video Analysis

Video Discussion Questions

      • Why were the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union allies during World War II? Was it inevitable that these nations would turn against each other once the war was over? Why or why not?
      • How did President Truman convince the American public and the U.S. Congress to support economic aid for Greece and Turkey and more broadly commit to protect free peoples in their struggles against totalitarian regimes anywhere in the world?
      • Do you believe that the Truman Doctrine, the United States’ pledge to assist free peoples fighting against communist aggression anywhere in the world, was more of a noble or a dangerous policy? Explain.
      • Truman’s foreign policy has been described as the “domino theory”: if dominoes are lined up one slightly behind the other, a slight push on one will knock them all down, one by one. In the video, how are the events in Greece and Turkey connected to the global spread of communism?
