Lesson 17-18: Coming to America

Introduction

In this lesson, you will view some powerful videos about the migration of people.

Immigration

The following videos have no narration (no one is talking).  Please pay close attention to the faces and body movement of the people in the video.  Notice if they are happy or sad?  Do they look excited or scared?  How would you feel leaving everything behind and coming to a place you did not know?

As you can see from the videos, many of these individuals were excited and a bit apprehensive. After all, they left EVERYTHING on a chance they would find more of what they desired in America. Imagine how the children felt. I’m sure they were terrified to be in an unknown place with so many different people.

Assignments

Today, you will have TWO assignments

  1. First, you will complete a Flip response to the prompt: Imagine what it would be like to be one of the immigrants in the video. Create a Flip where you describe some of the feelings these people felt as they stepped off the boat onto Ellis Island for the first time.
  2. Next, you will take on the role as an immigrant at the turn of the century. You will do your research and respond to questions about entering a new country, what you experience, and what you will do. Specific directions are on the Google Doc you will submit for the activity. You will have today and lesson 18 to complete this activity.
