Lesson 12: Remember the Maine
Introduction
In this lesson, we will read and analyze a poem about the USS Maine.

USS Maine
As you recall from the previous lesson, President McKinley sent the USS Maine as a way to threaten Spain’s presence in Cuba without getting directly involved in the conflict between Cuba and Spain. However, on February 15, 1898, the USS Maine mysteriously exploded. Spain claimed to not be involved, but the media did not believe them. In fact, the media started putting blame on Spain which resulted in the Spanish-American War.
