Introduction

Important Icon In this lesson, you will consider the meaning of one’s beliefs and ideals. Important Icon

In Social Studies this year, we will think about how the beliefs and ideals in a society influence the social, political, and economic decisions of that society. This theme will occur throughout the historical units we study. To begin, we will look at the meaning and some examples of beliefs and ideas.

To prepare for our introduction to historical themes in 5th grade, turn to the first page of your social studies journal. This can be a composition notebook or spiral notebook. As we learn about these themes, you will record the meaning of each in your journal. Follow the prompts as they are given.

Beliefs and Ideals

View the slideshow below to learn more about beliefs and ideals.

Activity

In your journal:  Write the words “belief” and “ideal”. Based on what you learned in the slideshow, record the meaning of each in your journal. I have included an example of what this may look like in your journal. You will continue this process throughout the unit.

Belief is when trust or confidence is placed in a person or thing. Ideal is a standard set as a model

Assignment

To wrap up our lesson, let us consider our own beliefs.

In the Flip assignment on the next page, you will record a response to the following questions:

    1. What beliefs do you have about learning? Please record 2-3 beliefs you have and how those beliefs could influence your view of school.
    2. Then, record 2 ideals you feel you possess. You can look back at the slideshow for some examples or come up with your own. Give an example of a time you have shown those ideals.
