W32D1 Reading
Introduction
When you’re reading, characters in your story will talk to each other. There are two important things to remember about the way characters speak: dialect and register.
Dialect is language that is specific to a region or a social group.
Register is the way someone uses language in a certain situation.
Formal register is when you are speaking properly. For example, when you are at school and speaking to your teacher or giving a speech in class, you will try to speak properly.
Informal register is when your are speaking with friends or family. This register uses abbreviation, hyperbole, slang, idioms, etc.
