W31D1 Reading

Introduction

When readers come to an unknown, or unfamiliar word, they have strategies to help them determine the meaning of unknown words. Skipping an unknown word is NOT a strategy. Instead of skipping try: 1) look AROUND the word for clues, or 2) examine the word (prefix, suffix, root) for clues. Also, consider the connotation or feeling (VIBE) of the sentence: is it positive or negative. Always, replace the unknown words with your guess or substitute word or phrase for unfamiliar words to see if it ‘works.’ If so, great! Read the sentence one more time with your new understanding and continue on through the paragraph or passage. If not, go back and continue working with the word until you figure it out.
