Introduction

Just like informational or narrative writing, opinion essays must have an effective conclusion. Effective means that the conclusion is interesting and clearly restates to the reader, or audience, the writer’s opinion and main reasons for supporting the writer’s opinion.

To remember the parts of the conclusion to an opinion essay, think of the three R's.

Conclusion Practice

Let’s practice finding the parts of an opinion essay conclusion.

Here is the writer’s opinion:

Students should be allowed to have extra PE every school day.

Here are the writer’s three strong points or reasons:

    1. Students can reduce the risk of diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
    2. Focus will be better during class.
    3. Physical activity builds stronger bones and muscles.

In Your Journal: Look at the example below. It is a conclusion paragraph to this opinion essay. Write the three parts (Three R’s) of the conclusion in your journal. Then, check your answers.

Students need to have PE every day at school. PE every day will keep kids healthy by reducing the risk of serious diseases, improve focus during class, and keep kids’ bones strong and healthy. You should let your local school leaders know that PE should be offered for every student every day!
