Introduction

When we use a title of a work, we must show whether the work is a whole piece or a part of a bigger part. Each kind of work has formatting and punctuation rules.

Review these common capitalization rules to make sure the titles of works are written correctly.

Do capitalize: Don’t capitalize:
  • The first and last words
  • Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs
  • Subordinating conjunctions
  • Articles (a, an, the)
  • Short prepositions (at, to, for, in, by, on)
  • Coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
