W22D1 Writing

Introduction

Text based opinion essays ask the writer to consider two sides of an argument or claim. Then, the reader must consider the two sides and the reasons to support each side. Finally, the reader must take a position and prove that position using evidence from the text.

Good writers always read the prompt several times before reading the passages to make sure they are focused and

understand the two sides of the argument.

Steps to understanding a prompt:

The first thing that writers will need to do before writing an opinion essay is to think about what the prompt or question is asking you to do. Writers must analyze or think specifically about the writing task.

The next step is to read the information about the topic (sometimes it is provided to you and other times you may have to research).

Determine which side of the argument you’re on or what your opinion will be. CAUTION: pick one side of the argument or opinion and focus on that side.

Then, the writer will go back and gather the evidence/reasons from the texts to support his/her opinion.

Let's Practice Making Strong Opinions!

If schools had to choose between only having either art or music class, which would you choose and why?

What is the best vacation destination? Why?

If kids could only play one sport, which would you choose and why?

In Your Journal:

Step 1: Decide which side of each argument you would be on.

Step 2: For each argument, write your opinion and think of at least three reasons why you chose that side.

Step 3: Put a box around your opinion. Is it firm to what you believe?

Step 4: Then using three different colors, lightly shade your three reasons. Do you think your reasons are strong enough to convince others to see your point of view? If not, could you make the reasons stronger? Is there a better reason?
