W3D1 Writing

Introduction

Writers use imagery (creating a picture in the reader’s mind) to make stories more interesting. Writers can add sensory details to show what the characters see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. Another technique, or strategy, for creating an image in the reader’s mind is adding figurative language.

Figurative language can show what the character is like (his/her traits) and details in the setting.

Great Narrative writing is descriptive and expressive with sensory details and figurative language.

Think about a time at your favorite place or imagine an event at a place you’d like to visit. It may be a local park, your bedroom, the beach, a friend’s house, or anywhere you’d like to visit. Write a descriptive paragraph about a real or imagined visit to your special place. Make sure to include sensory details (what you see, hear, taste, touch, and smell) and at least three different kinds of figurative language.

In Your Journal:

Step 1: Brainstorm a topic. In your journal, make a list of at least five places you’ve visited and/or places you’d like to visit. Think about a real or imagined experience there. Underline one place to write about today.

Step 2: Prewrite. Make a list of what you might see, hear, taste, touch, or smell at your favorite place. Add at least three types of figurative language to describe your character or you and/or the setting.

Step 3: Write your own descriptive paragraph using the step-by-step instructions below.
