Introduction

Descriptive Writing

Just like there are different genres of reading, there are different genres of writing. Narrative writing is a story about you or made-up characters and plot. Writers use narrative techniques, or strategies, to make their writing more interesting. One technique is to add sensory details.

Writers add what they see, hear, taste, touch, and smell to describe a place or an object for the readers. These are called sensory details.

Great Narrative Writing Is descriptive. Writers use sensory details to describe their five senses.

In Your Journal: In your writing journal, make a list of all the sensory details a writer could include to describe this place. What can you see? What can you imagine that you may smell, touch, or hear?

Let's Practice:

In Your Journal:

Step 1: Brainstorm a topic. In your journal, make a list of at least five places you like to visit. Underline one place to write about today.

Step 2: Prewrite. Make a list of what you might see, hear, taste, touch, or smell at the place you are writing about.

Step 3: Write your own descriptive paragraph using the step-by-step instructions below.
