Lesson 2 - Organelles: Cell Membrane

Introduction

Today, we’ll start discussing different parts of the cell.

Parts of a cell are known as organelles. Organelles act like organs in our bodies. There are different organelles that do different tasks for the cell.  Just like in our bodies we have organs that do different things. Our lungs help us breathe, our stomach helps us digest food, and our hearts move blood around our bodies.

Today we'll discuss the outermost part of a cell - the cell membrane.

Directions:

    1. Grab your Science Journal and a pencil.
    2. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    3. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    4. Watch the Module 2 - Lesson 2 video below.
    5. Write down the important terms and their definitions (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
    6. Pause the video as often as you need.

Edible Cell Models

Later in this module, you’ll work on making a cell model at home. As we discuss different organelles and their functions in cells, we’ll make sure to talk about ways that they could be represented in a model.

Below, you will find some fun ways to demonstrate the cell membrane with items at home.

Edible Cell Models

Edible models are a fun way to model the parts of a cell. Here the cell membrane is represented by a red band of icing that wraps around the cell.

Cell in a Bag

A cell in a bag is another great way to model a cell. Here the Ziploc bag itself is the cell membrane. It is what holds the cell together. In this model, all of the organelles are being held together by the  cell membrane (Ziploc bag.)

Let's see if you can figure out which items represent the cell membranes
