Lesson 8 - Uses of Electromagnets

Introduction

Why might we want to use an electromagnet rather than a permanent bar magnet? There are two obvious advantages to using electromagnets.

  1. They can be switched on and off. Complete an electric circuit and a current passes to produce a magnetic field. Switch off the current and the magnetism disappears.
  2. Also, their magnetic strength can be changed by:
    • increasing the number of coils (or turns) of wire.
    • increasing the electric current through the coil.
    • placing a magnetic material inside the solenoid coil.

In your Science Journal:

    1. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    2. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    3. Explore the Module 9 - Lesson 8 presentation below. Today, we’ll learn about the uses of electromagnets.  We’ll be exploring a Google Slides presentation about electromagnets and how humans use them.
    4. Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams in your Science Journal.
