Lesson 4 - Static Electricity PHET Simulation 2

Introduction

Let’s learn more about static electricity by using an interactive simulation from PHET. This simulation is called Balloons and Static Electricity.  You will use a balloon and a sweater to create static electricity and further learn about static discharge.

Today we'll be exploring a simulation from Phet about static electricity

explore the simulation below

answer the following questions
1. Predict what happens when a charged balloon is moved closer to the neutral wall.
2. after rubbing the balloon on the sweater, how does the charge on the balloon compare to the charges on the sweater? What happens to the positive charges? What happens to the negative charges? Draw a picture.
Remove the wall and use the balloons to explore attraction and repulsion. how do the positive and negative symbols help you decide whether something attracts or repels?
explain how a balloon can strongly or weakly attract to the sweater.
