Lesson 1 - Electricity Introduction
Introduction
Electricity is a form of energy. This energy can be used to power electrical items such as toasters, kettles, cookers, televisions, and computers. Electrical energy is caused by electrons (particles in atoms) moving to make a current. Electricity can be created in a variety of ways, such as:
-
- burning fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal) to produce steam at power stations
- using wind power generated by wind turbines
- using solar power generated by the sun
- using water power (sometimes called hydropower) generated by running or falling water
Electricity is transported to our homes, schools, and places of work through wires and cables.
Electricity can also be stored in batteries (sometimes called cells.).

In your Science Journal:
-
- Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
- Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
- Explore the Module 8 - Lesson 1 presentation below. Today, we’ll learn about what makes human civilization go - electricity. We’ll be exploring a Google Slides presentation. It is a presentation that will help introduce you to the idea of electricity and its properties and characteristics.
- Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
