Lesson 5 - Phase Changes

Introduction

Materials can be changed from one state to another by heating or cooling. By adding heat energy, a substance can change from a solid to a liquid or from a liquid to a gas. By removing heat energy, a substance can change from a liquid to a solid or from a gas to a liquid. So the state of a matter depends on its gaining or losing heat energy.
Water is a good example of the state of matter because its three states are all pretty common. The solid form of water is ice. The liquid form of water is water. The gas form of water is steam.

In your Science Journal:

    1. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    2. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    3. Explore the Module 7 - Lesson 5 presentation below. Today, we’ll learn about how matter can change from one state to another.  We’ll be exploring a Google Slides presentation. It is a presentation that will help introduce you to the idea of phase changes (changing the state of matter.)
    4. Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
