Lesson 23 - Human Intervention - Beach Erosion and Jetties

Introduction

Beach erosion is the loss of beach sand, usually from a combination of wind and water movement such as waves and currents. Sand is moved off the beach or shore by these things and is transferred to deeper water. This process makes beaches appear shorter and lower. You can see severe beach erosion after a strong storm like a hurricane.

In your Science Journal:

    1. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    2. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    3. Explore the Module 6 - Lesson 23 presentation below. Beach erosion is the loss of beach sand, usually from a combination of wind and water movement. Sand is picked up off the beach, and transferred to deeper water, or to another coastal spot. This process makes beaches appear shorter and lower. People build structures like jetties and sea walls to protect the coast from erosion.
    4. Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
