Lesson 22 - Human Intervention - Contour Plowing

Introduction

Earth’s powerful forces also make big impacts on farmers, the people that use the land to produce food for many others. Soil erosion is especially severe on sloping land, when farmers plow straight down the slope, this creates gullies in which rainwater quickly deepens. Contour plowing is a way to stop this form of erosion. It involves plowing along contours.

In your Science Journal:

    1. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    2. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    3. Explore the Module 6 - Lesson 22 presentation below. Contour plowing is the practice of plowing horizontally along the contours of the land. This plowing technique prevents soil erosion in hilly and contoured areas by capturing water runoff. Contour farming is a sustainable form of agriculture and is mostly done in hilly and sloped areas.
    4. Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
