Lesson 17 - Destructive Forces - Earthquakes
Introduction
The processes for wearing away land are called destructive forces. Today, we will learn about Earthquakes. These large releases of energy from the Earth’s crust can be very destructive. They are constantly reshaping the Earth.

In your Science Journal:
-
- Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
- Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
- Explore the Module 6 - Lesson 17 presentation below. An earthquake is a shaking of the surface of the earth, caused by sudden movement in the Earth's crust. They can be extremely violent. They are the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. This creates seismic waves, which are waves of energy that travel through the Earth. The study of earthquakes is called seismology. Seismology studies the frequency, type, and size of earthquakes over a period of time. There are large earthquakes and small earthquakes. Large earthquakes can take down buildings and cause death and injury. Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers.
- Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
