Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Earth

Introduction

The Earth is a dynamic, changing planet. The structure of the Earth is divided into four major components: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. Each layer has a unique chemical composition and can impact life on Earth's surface. Movement in the mantle caused by variations in heat from the core, causes the plates to shift, which can cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. These natural hazards then change our landscape, and in some cases, threaten the lives of people and animals. Over the next five lessons, we will learn more about how the Earth is constructed.

In your Science Journal:

    1. Write down today’s Lesson Title at the top of your next Journal page.
    2. Write today’s learning objective on the first line.
    3. Explore the Module 6 - Lesson 1 presentation below. Today, we’ll learn about the layers that make up the Earth.  We’ll be exploring a Google Slides presentation. It is a presentation that will help introduce you to the idea of the Earth being made of layers that interact and shape the planet.
    4. Write down the important terms and their definitions and important diagrams (yellow boxes) in your Science Journal.
