GRAMMAR
Introduction
Hi grammarians! Today, we are going review the dreaded run-on!
Have you ever been writing something and then went back to re-read your work... and thought "wow... I wrote a LOT of words and ideas, but I only have ONE period in this whole thing." Oops! You probably had some run-on sentences!
Run-on sentences happen when we have two or more sentences combined together without punctuation or conjunctions.
We have to fix these run-ons when we see them. We can fix them in a few different ways:
1. Put a comma and a conjunction
2. Put a semicolon ;
3. Put a period and capitalize to have two separate sentences.

In Your Notebook: Correct the run-on sentences. Try to use each of three strategies listed above.
1. We wanted to go to the party we decided to go to the movies instead.
2. I love collecting things I have lots of collections.
3. My mom and dad watched my performance they loved it.

READING
Introduction
We will be reviewing text features. Authors sometimes choose to give information visually. As readers, we pay attention to these to gain more knowledge on the topic.
Text features are visuals that help us understand what we are reading. Often they are charts, timelines, animations, or maps in informational reading and writing.

Stop and Jot
In Your Notebook: While you are reading your informational book, find text features and fill out the chart. Read for 30 minutes.

WRITING
Introduction
Today, we will be revising and editing our opinion essays. Make sure to use CUPS and ARMS to help you complete your essay.
EXTENDED WRITING-RESPONSE WRITING TASK
Some people think it is better to give than to receive. Other people think it is better to receive than to give. Think about the ideas in the two passages. Then write an opinion piece that gives your opinion about which idea you think is better. Be sure to use information from BOTH passages in your opinion piece. |
Writer’s Checklist
Be sure to:
• Introduce your opinion.
• Support your opinion with reasons and details from the passages.
• Give your reasons and details in a clear order.
• Develop your ideas clearly and use your own words, except when quoting directly from the passages.
• Identify the passages by title or number when using details or facts directly from the passages.
• Use linking words, phrases, and clauses to connect reasons.
