We are continuing to work on reference materials by comparing the ones that we have learned about.

 

Reference Materials

 

Dictionaries

A book of words in alphabetical order
Gives definition, part of speech, and pronunciation

Glossaries Domain-specific vocabulary words in alphabetical order
In the back of the reference material
Give definitions
Thesaurus

A book of synonyms and antonyms in alphabetical order
Helps improve word choice while writing

Almanacs

A book of facts about a given year
Written chronologically (in order by time) or by topic

Atlas

A book of maps (used to view a specific location or surface features)

Encyclopedia

A set of books with articles on topics
Topics written in alphabetical order
This was the “internet” before the internet existed!

Almanac - Lists all major events in a specific year
Annual publication
Often one volume
Encyclopedia
Gives brief description on topics
Not an annual publication
Often multiple volumes
