Phone (2).png READING

Introduction

Today we will be reading a text and deciphering whether it is a first or second hand account.

Think if you got into an argument with a family member, like a cousin or a sibling. Your family member runs up to your grown-up and tells on you. Would you want your side of the story heard? Absolutely! Your cousin's side is very biased, meaning that their account is one-sided and probably unfair to you. You want to make sure that your story is heard in order for your grown-up to understand the whole story.

Think of first hand accounts this way. Even though they are valuable to read because they give us an idea of what life was actually like back then, we want to make sure to read multiple accounts because there may be bias within first hand accounts.

Stop and Jot

In Your Notebook:  Read for thirty minutes from a nonfiction text. Then answer:

1. What is bias? Can you think of a situation where you thought something was unfair because of bias?

2. Is there bias in your reading today? Does the author want you to think in a certain way?
