Introduction

This week you are going to use our understanding of context clues to apply to your own reading. There will be a quiz on Friday on context clues.

Context Clues When strong readers come to an unfamiliar word, they use the clues around the words to determine the meaning. I Inference - The meaning is not given. Use context clues. I don’t like talking with Jane; all she talks about is herself. She is so arrogant. D Definition - the meaning of the word is explained Jane is so arrogant. She thinks she is better than everyone else. E Example - an example of the word is in the sentence Jane is so arrogant. She is always bragging about how great she is at school. A Antonym - a word with opposite meaning is used Jane is so arrogant. She needs to be more humble so she will have more friends. S Synonym - words with similar meaning are used Jane is so arrogant, proud, self-centered, and overbearing.

In Your Notebook:  During your reading of nonfiction this week, find words that are unfamiliar. How does the author help us understand what the word means? Create your own definition using the strategies listed above. Create your own chart like the one above. Can you find an example of all the IDEAS?

Introduction

The best online research is found when we use websites and search engines that are credible. This means that they are going to give good information that does not try to convince us to think one way or another.

A lot of websites that are ".com" websites are not credible. To find the most factual information about a topic, try to find websites that have the following domains:

.org organization
.gov government agency or sponsor
.edu educational
