When strong readers come to an unfamiliar word, they use the clues around the words to determine the meaning.

Introduction

On day 1, we learned about first hand accounts. Today, we will focus on second-hand accounts in nonfiction texts.

Second hand accounts are written by people who were not there. They heard about it or researched about the topic before they were able to write on it.

  • biographies
  • textbooks
  • research articles
  • dictionaries
  • encyclopedias

Read for 30 minutes from a nonfiction story of your choice. Answer the following questions:

Is this a second hand account? How can you tell?
